Guide to Barrier-Free Communication from Big City Lab and European Business Association

From 19 to 25 May, National Barrier-Free Week is taking place in Ukraine. This nationwide awareness campaign reminds people of the main aspects of barrier-free access and the rules of ethical interaction with others.

The Big City Lab team has been working in the field of barrier-free accessibility since 2019 and helps businesses, cities, and communities become accessible. We have expertise not only in physical accessibility, but also in other types of barrier-free access: educational, informational, and social. We help businesses adapt their premises and workplaces, teach them how to communicate and interact with people with limited mobility, create joint guidelines, and train their staff.

“Barrier-free access is an issue that should be taken care of not only by the state. Because everybody owns the spaces. And for businesses, adapting their own spaces is a basic manifestation of respect for those returning from the frontline”, – believes Viktoria Titova, CEO of Big City Lab.

Barrier-free access in all areas of life is something Ukraine should strive for. This issue must be addressed both at the government level and at the level of each individual business. Our team helps implement accessibility practices in both of these areas.

Together with our partners, the European Business Association, we are working to make Ukrainian businesses barrier-free in all directions.

In particular, we have prepared a Guide to Barrier-Free Communication. It outlines:

  • how to speak correctly about and to people with disabilities;
  • how to interact with people with disabilities;
  • how to communicate correctly with veterans and the military;
  • how and when to use gender-sensitive language.
